Hooping with Da Bruhs

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated held a basketball tournament Saturday November 13th  to kick off the homecoming festivities. The registration fee for each team was $16 and the maximum number of players on each team was eight. Even if the team lacked eight players the registration fee was still $16 and had to be paid in full the day of the event. There was a $100 cash prize for the winners which was team Dem Boys.

Gospel Explosioin

During the week of November 14^th 2010, Claflin University Students celebrated their annual homecoming, where there was an abundance of activities created by clubs and various organizations. Organizations such as SAB and SGA helped Claflin students get pumped and eager to partake in the activities. On Sunday there was a Gospel Explosion. The concert featured artists such as Claflin’s very own Gospel Choir, D.R.E.AM. and J.J Hairston along with youthful praise. With the Gospel Explosion being such a success, the Homecoming Week just beginning and a motto that is “Envisioning Greatness”, homecoming 2010 was expected to be filled with excitement.

Dorm Step Show

One particular event that takes place each year for homecoming is known as the Residential Life Step Show, better known as the “Dorm Step Show”. The dorms that were competing in this year’s show were N.E.W (North, East, and West halls combined), Kleist hall, High Rise, and of course, South and Asbury. Anticipation has been rising in students representing each dorm and also students around campus. The team that came in first place not only had the title as the best until the next school year, but also had a chance to perform in the Greek Step Show on November 20^th.  There was a little controversy with the final decision. Most students felt as if Asbury should have taken the title. Kleist Hall is now the reigning champion dormitories here at Claflin University.

Greek Mock Step Show

On Tuesday, the Greeks were apart of Claflin Universities homecoming where the fraternities switched roles with the sororities pretending to be each other. The crowd found it humorous but how did the Greeks feel? Delta, Shatavia Wynn said “The Greek switch role has been passed down from generations and the purpose is to laugh at each other but out of love.”

En Veux Fashion Show

Tuesday night, many students and faculty stormed WVM to see the modeling show. Upon entering, the guests were greeted by the company on the staircase. They were at a standstill like mannequins as photographers snapped pictures of them. After sitting the crowd took their seats and waited for the show to begin. The first scene started with each individual modeling purple and grey. The company kicked the second scene off “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith with having each model whipping their hair to a hip hop vibe. The En Veux Modeling Company ended the show with a band scene modeling as a band with precision. The models looked great as they performed their skills on the stage all to syncopate their movements to drums, tubas, flutes and saxophones. The crowd enjoyed themselves as well as the models on the stage.

Annual Comedy Show

Wednesday’s events brought many students and faculty. The Annual Comedy Show took place in WVM. The star of the comedy show was the well known comedian Benji Brown. Brown has appeared on various shows including B.E.T’s Comic View. The show was hilarious because of the way that he disguised his voice so well for the alter ego. “It was funny, I liked it!!” was the response that I had gotten from the college freshman, Evan Conner. The room was filled with laughter as students exited the auditorium.

Pulse Dance Company Show

On Thursday, Pulse Dance Company showcased their performance. The performance’s music reflected the play list generated by radio stations, under titles such as College Mix and Golden Oldies. The dancers danced to the famous and most popular songs on the radio. The crowd enjoyed the show and began to sing along with the songs. The finale song was Beyonce’s most popular song “Get Me Bodied.” The Pulse Dance Company ended the show well with this selection.

Claflin Homecomng Basketball Games

The girls game showed that panther’s had strife and determination to defeat their opponents for their first game on Saturday. The game ended with Claflin scoring 58 points to the Paine’s 53. The spirit of the crowd was in full roar as they awaited the start of the boy game. Before the start of the boys game, an interview was conducted with Freshman Jazjuan Wilson. When asked how his feelings were toward the game, his response was, “ I am excited for my first college game, I have been working hard.” The boys game seemed to be filled with slips , falls and more fouls than necessary. But as the game drew to the end of its final quarter, things seemed to grow even more intense. During the last thirty seven seconds, Claflin and Paine were at a constant neck and neck with their scores. Ultimately, this led into over-time when the quarter ended with both teams having a score of 55. After the intense five minutes of overtime, Claflin boy’s dominated in the gymnasium. The crowds roared with excitement after both teams won their first game of the season.

Greek Step Show

Each Greek Fraternity and Sorority put together a show to compete against each other. The Fraternities competed against each other and the Sororities competed against each other. The competition is meant to prove that certain fraternities and sororities are better than others. In Order – Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. went first. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. performed second. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. performed third. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. performed fourth. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. performed fifth. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. performed sixth. Phi Beta Sigma performed seventh. And Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. performed last.

Claflin Founder's Day Program

At the Founder’s Day program that Claflin University held to commemorate its 141^st year in operation, Robert Brown was the speaker at this auspicious event-president at Boston College-and he talked about the new relationship between the universities . The academic perspective broadened, because of the world-class instruction given at both institutions. Claflin and Boston will try to foster a more familiar environment, mentally, for that exchange student. That statement’s premise is rooted-in what we know about Claflin and the statements that President Brown iterated about Boston. Both institutions hold the different departments, rooted in the arts and sciences.
